New-look Cornwall Colts tangle with defending-champion Navan Grads
Thursday night’s home game for the Cornwall Jr. A Colts had some snipers flying around the civic complex ice.
The defending Central Canada Hockey League playoff champion Navan Grads would end up with the upper hand with the league’s hottest forward, Shaan Kingwell, scoring twice and collecting four points in a 7-5 victory.
The Colts have some sizzling forwards these days too, with Bradley Fraser collecting an assist, the veteran with 14 points on the young campaign, one of four CCHL skaters with that total and just behind leader Kingwell (15 points).
Fraser, 20, has been on the squad four years and he’s seen it all, so rolling with the ups, downs and punches is a good, long-term approach, especially early in the campaign, when there’s a lot of roster uncertainty, and particularly these days for the now 4-3 Colts who were heading to Smiths Falls for a Friday night tilt.
On Wedneday the Colts made an early-in-the-season trade with Hawkesbury. Forward Fernand-Olivier Perron, 20, and the rights to goalie Cameron Hollands went to the Hawks, in exchange for forward Parker Thompson, 17, of Hogansburg, N.Y., the rights to goalie Caleb Chabot, and a 10th-round draft pick.
“Fern was a big part of our team, it’s sad to see him go,” Fraser said. “But it’s part of the business, and we have some good (talent) coming this way.”
The Colts are also dealing with the loss of Ethan Montroy, another veteran forward who’s moved 4,000 kilometres across the country to play in the British Columbia Junior A league with the Prince George Spruce Kings.
