Grads Fall in Season Opener

The Grads season opener did not go as planned, losing to the Pembroke Lumber Kings in a high-scoring 7-4 final.

After 16-year-old rookie Curtis Fabbro scored the first goal just 2:52 into the game, the Lumber Kings offense camp to life, scoring four unanswered goals in a span of 7 minutes to go into the intermission with a 4-1 lead.

The Grads answered quickly in the second period though, opening up the scoring just 50 seconds on a goal scored by Alex Way, his first as a Grad. 2 minutes later California-born forward Bradley Estrada scored to bring the game back to within one goal.

Minutes later Pembroke would answer with two goals of their own, reclaiming their three goal lead. Estrada would score his second of the game at 14:56 of the second period to lead the Grads into the intermission with a two goal deficit.

The third period was rather quiet with the Lumber Kings scoring the lone goal on the power-play at 19:34, sealing their 7-4 victory over the Grads in the first game of the CCHL season. The Lumber Kings chased Brennan Kitchen from the net after scoring 6 on 31 shots, forcing rookie Seth Carter into action sooner than anticipated. Pembroke dominated the shot count, outshooting Navan 45-26.
